BAYRAKTAR MOSQUE
Project: Elevator and Walkway at the Bayraktar Mosque.
Location: Nicosia, Cyprus, at the Kostantza Bastion of the Venetian walls
The Project
This architecturally distinctive project is located in one of Nicosia’s most historically significant areas, right next to the Kostantza Bastion of the Venetian walls. The modern elevator and the passageway under the old bridge connect the historic Old City with the modern part of the city and provide barrier-free access to the Bayraktar Mosque. The mosque is located at the spot where, in 1570, the first Ottoman standard-bearer scaled the walls. A place steeped in history, now complemented by minimalist exposed concrete.
An exemplary example of exposed concrete architecture in the Mediterranean climate
The Background of the Design
The clean geometry of the exposed concrete creates a deliberate contrast with the rough limestone of the historic fortification walls. Such projects require the utmost precision in execution and ongoing maintenance to preserve their monochromatic aesthetic. Important note: We were not involved in the building’s original construction. However, for us, this project serves as an excellent reference example of the high demands placed on exposed concrete surfaces in the Mediterranean climate. For this task, our mineral-based systems make us the ideal partner.
Exposed Concrete Finishing & Treatment
As experts in concrete aesthetics, we use projects like these to showcase the full range of our services. We specialize in concrete finishing and retouching with localized color adjustments using purely mineral pigments, concrete restoration through professional repair of imperfections and chipped edges, as well as cleaning and protection using sustainable sealants and systems that shield against environmental impacts.
